"One day a few years ago I was reading a book while working out on a
stair-stepper. In my work as a university researcher and professor in
physical activity intervention, I had been doing a lot of thinking
about how I could help women become more active.
I had learned
from research that a woman’s ability to start and stay physically
active may be related to her feelings of self-worth. And I knew that I
could provide training to help enhance women’s feelings of self-worth.
Then
it hit me: I’m reading a book…women love to read…and women love to get
together with friends and talk. Why not start a physical activity book
club? Instead of reading mysteries, we’d read books that could change
women’s feelings of self-worth and their motivation to be physically
active.
